      Wasted

Can you taste the rotten fruit
of a tree who worked and toiled,
yet the seeds of its tribute
dangled from its branch and spoiled?

Who should rightly take the blame
for the wasting of this food,
that great tree from which it came
or those by whom it was viewed

yet who failed to seek it out,
be it for their fear, disgust
      or whatever source of doubt
smote their hearts with such distrust?

      Better yet, I should inquire,
how can this fruit be fulfilled,
fall to the ground and expire
so that its seeds might be spilled?

It might as well have not grown
if merely to rot and waste
in the only place it's known
with no one to have a taste.
