When I Close My Eyes

by

Kimberly Hunt

When I close my eyes,
it takes me back to
another place in time.
A time of desire,
and days filled with love.
When I close my eyes,
I am taken back to
the days of me and you.
To a time when my life
seemed complete.
And my days were
lived for you
and the family we made.
When I close my eyes,
I allow myself that retreat.
And I give myself
a moment to think
about where I went wrong.
When I should have stopped
in my tracks and let you go on.
I think about how I could
have held on to you --
and still let you think
that you grasped on to the
freedom that you need.
When I close my eyes,
I give myself away again.
To you.
And when I open them,
I remember.
I remember that you
didn't accept my gift of me.
