       How could I know
that you would be the one?
Do children understand first love as such?
I thought it was the moonlight or the sun
that gave your eyes the spark I could not touch.
Without the shame a wiser girl would feel,
I teased you boldly through each summer day.
The gentle kiss each night, I let you steal—
and thought our world would always be this way.
Until the spark became a raging fire—
Consuming childish dreams, it filled my soul
and left a flame that burned with such desire
no other pain or pleasure could control.
Fly high, sweet summer love and know that I
still love the boy who taught this girl to fly. |
