The Unheard Song

by

Nicole Starleigh Yeager

For Peggy, my neighbor.

She's a very lovely person
Sweet, kind, and happy
She speaks often of
Things we all know well

I share with her a lot of things --
We laugh at email jokes
and funny pictures,
but I can't show her everything

She cannot hear the music
I sent with the beautiful picture
of the flowers in the spring --
she can only see the screen

She cannot hear my favorite song,
or listen to the rain on the window
or the wind as it blows through branches --
but she can feel these things

She cannot feel the music, though,
and knows nothing of its beauty
except how people explain it to her --
if one can imagine an unheard song

Is her music as beautiful
as you and I know it to be?
Can she hear it in her mind
such as we so take for granted?

If I could give her just one gift
It would be to hear a song
For life is so much better
when there's a melody to go with it.
