When I Was Young

by

Ray Wayne

When I was young -
There were cowboys and Indians
Hopalong Cassidy, Roy and Dale
Tonto and the Lone Ranger

As I grew older, those heroes were replaced
By girls, dancing, and music
There were the Beatles and the Rolling Stones
The prom and more importantly - graduation

We started a band - Bruce, George, Steve, Bill and I
Though traveling not far
Practicing, playing, learning and growing
Knowing our Bill - listening to him sing Elvis

If I knew then what I know now -
I would have hugged Bill, and told him I loved him
I was the first to be drafted
Bill followed before I came home

Soon after my returning home
The word came of Bill's untimely death
When I was young -
There were cowboys and Indians
