Sweet Dreams

by

Stacey

I wake suddenly with a start,
possessed by the fear gripping my heart.
My tearless eyes throb, ache, and burn
I had hoped this hell would never return.
Blood like an ice floe clogging my veins
as my hope and spirit fade and wane.
My burning throat is parched and dry
feeling raw as if I've swallowed lye.
I'm freefalling, in a nose dive
can't break loose no matter how I strive.
My bones are trembling, deep inside,
all I want is this fear to subside.
My skin crawls, without and within,
losing all hope I take it on the chin.
So upset I can barely breathe
I lie back down on my bed and seethe.
Furious that I've lost control
feeling caustic clear through to my soul.
