Tire Swing

by

Steve Quick

I was out for a Sunday drive
It was a great day to be alive

That's when I saw this giant oak tree
There was something there I had to see

It had been a while since I had seen such a thing
It was an old rubber tire swing

It was one of those mornings after
I swore I heard children's laughter

A couple of voices filled with joy
Maybe a young girl and boy

Higher Daddy higher please
The swing began to move with such ease

Shouts of laughter filled my ears
Such happiness I had not heard in years

And then silence was all I heard
No laughing, no giggling not a word

I turned to leave, one last look and a sigh
I saw two small ghostly white hands waving goodbye

So with a smile I went on my way
Knowing I would return some other day
