How You Know Your Son is a Man Now

by

Sue Marier

He still wears his cap backwards to dinner
But he joins in adult conversation

He comes to family gatherings in jeans
And talks about life with his aunts and uncles

He goes out with the guys for a drink or two
Returns home sober, he has things to do

He asks you to look up a phone number please
But he takes care of the ticket arrangements back to University

He walks casually in line for his train to leave
And gives you a hug, picks up his bags and moves forward
not looking back

You stand there with nearly a tear in your eye
He's on the right train, on the right track
There's no turning back son
you are truly a man in my eyes today.
