Rejection

by

Theresa Allen

How dare you.

The slap of cold, blue, steel bricks slapping slabs of ice,
The searing heat of a butcher’s knife
Paring feathered flesh from dry, brittle bone.

Adding insult to injury.

When you say, "It’s the best for you,"
Don’t kid yourself.
I’m not fooled.
It’s really the best for you
And has nothing whatsoever in common
With what’s in my best interest.
